When it is time to put down the shopping bags, downtown has several easy lunch options. Ba's Vietnamese Comfort Food serves family recipes including pho, banh mi, vermicelli noodle salads, and rice dishes. The menu includes gluten-free choices for diners with special dietary needs.

Bodhi Cafe & Bistro is another good stop for a relaxed lunch, with fresh-baked breads and pastries, bowls, pressed sandwiches, and café favorites. At Gallery Calapooia, works by Mid-Willamette Valley artists include paintings, photography, ceramics, fiber art, and other mediums. The artist-run cooperative makes it possible to take home a piece of local creativity, from smaller giftable works to original fine art.

Book lovers can settle in at The Chapter House, a Tolkien-inspired bookstore designed as a comfortable place for stories, imagination, coffee, and tea. Browse its selected titles, then give yourself a few minutes to enjoy the cozy setting.

Creative shoppers can also visit Brigitte's Place. The downtown fabric shop carries quality textiles, books, and sewing notions, making it a natural stop when your gift list includes a quilter, sewist, or maker.

Part of the pleasure of shopping Downtown Albany is what happens between stores. Historic buildings line the streets, and the Willamette River waterfront is only a few blocks from the downtown shopping district.

Finish the day with a meal that comes with its own Albany story. Sybaris Bistro recently moved into the restored Oregon Electric Railway Station at 133 5th Ave. SE. The historic depot opened in 1912, and a major restoration preserved the landmark for its new life as a restaurant.

Sybaris offers an upscale dining experience built around seasonal cooking. Bar seating opens at 4 p.m., and dining room reservations begin at 5 p.m. Reservations are recommended for dinner. For a less formal finish to the day, the bar offers open seating.
