What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally and internationally recognized commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day—June 19, 1865—when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
